The Fisk Generating Station is an inactive medium-size, coal-fired electric generating station located in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The station ceased operations in August 2012 due to competition from natural gas-fired power, environmental regulations soon, and continuous strikes by its staff.
By focusing on the existing Generating Station and the adjacent Switch House, the design takes influence from the previous 1903 construction by separating our program into Housing within the Switch House and Growing inside the Main Generating Station. The established typology becomes a new epicenter for the neighborhood, utilizing the River’s edge as an access point, the Fisk Station allows for further city-wide outreach and expansion of a food-growing network. The Water taxi system provides for movement in and out of the site, while the Riverwalk becomes a location of leisure and recreation.
